District Dignitaries and Officers of Lions Club International pledged their commitment to the “Barkada Kontra Droga” Program of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), to live a healthy and drug-free lifestyle and support the government’s fight against drug abuse. This event was held last September 23, 2013 at PDEA Conference Room, Diliman, Quezon City.
Ms. Nilda C. Cuerpo, the District Governor of MD 301-D2 of Lions Club International, expressed their appreciation to the Board for the conduct of the BKD Seminar. She stated that the Lions Club is committed to be an active partner in the crusade against drug abuse.
The message of the Secretary Antonio A. Villar Jr., Chairman, DDB, was delivered by Undersecretary Rommel L. Garcia, Vice Chairman, DDB who represented the Chairman. He acknowledged the dedication shown by the officers and members of the Lions Club. He also highlighted the importance of the active involvement of every sector of the society in the fight against drugs.
The discussion on Government’s Policies, Plans and Programs to address the drug abuse problem was handled by Undersecretary Edgar C. Galvante, Permanent Board Member, DDB. He cited the five pillars of action being utilized by the government to address the drug problem namely: drug supply reduction, drug demand reduction, alternative development, civic awareness and response and regional and international cooperation. He also shared the 2014 Program Thrust of the Agency in addressing the drug problem.
Undersecretary Rommel L. Garcia, DDB Vice Chairman, discussed the Medical Aspect of Drug Abuse and how addiction happens and what happens to the mind and body of a drug dependent.
“Addiction is a disease that can be treated. As members of society, we play a big role in the treatment and rehabilitation of drug dependents and more importantly in the prevention of drug abuse,” Usec. Garcia stated.
