Another set of parents, this time in Sorsogon City, were trained for Systematic Training on Effective Parenting. This training program is a joint effort of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) and the Sorsogon City Anti-Drug Abuse Council designed to demonstrate and appreciate the roles of parents on drug abuse prevention and control. A total of 83 Sorsoganon parents coming from different barangays participated in the training that was held at Vicenta Hall, Fernando’s Hotel, Sorsogon City, last August 6-7, 2014.
Mary Ellen D. Jamisola, City Councilor welcomed the participants and expressed her gratitude towards DDB and Sorsogon City ADAC for the implementation of the said training.
Atty. Jovert Laceda represented Sorsogon Mayor Sally Lee. In a message read for her by Atty. Lacerda, Mayor Lee said, “I am grateful to DDB for their wholehearted support in the fight against drug abuse. I encourage the youth and the parents to engage in positive alternatives to drugs like sports and recreational activities so that they may be free from abuse of any harmful substance. I challenge you to strive for peace, progress and prosperity towards a drug-free Philippines.”
The Drug Situation Update which was highlighted by the Supply Reduction Accomplishments of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) was discussed by Agent Ma. Lorena B. Uy, Assistant Operations Officer, Preventive Education and Community Involvement (PECI), Sorsogon City. Agent Uy mentioned that the ill-manned seaports and airports coupled with weak security measures were contributory factors to the escalating incidence of drug abuse in the City.
Ms. Emma R. Pastorfide, Health Education and Promotion Officer IV, Preventive Education Training and Information Division, DDB, talked about the efforts of the government to address the drug problem including the explanation of DBB’s five (5) Pillars of Action.
Ma. Liduvina F. Dorion, M. D., DDB – DOH Accredited Physician, discussed the Medical Aspects of Drug Abuse. She emphasized on the harmful effects of drugs to the body when abused and the consequences which the family suffers when a member gets hooked on drugs.
The Salient Features of Republic Act 9165 or Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 was discussed by Atty. Cesar G. Posada, Legal Consultant, DDB. He explained to the participants the various acts punishable by law as well as it corresponding penalties.
Highlights of the training featured discussions on responsible parenthood and drug abuse prevention program for families which will educate and prepare families and communities to handle the effects of drug abuse.
