Some 89 senior citizens of Muntinlupa attended the Training Seminar on Drug Abuse Prevention Education for Senior Citizens and vowed support to fight the evil of illegal drugs.
The Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) in collaboration with Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Office (DAPCO), Muntinlupa City and Office of Senior Citizen Affairs (OSCA) successfully conducted the said seminar in Muntinlupa Sports Center, Brgy. Tunasan, Muntinlupa City.
The seminar started through a welcome remarks by PSSupt Florocito E. Ragudo (Ret.) followed by an inspirational message by Atty. Patricio Buncayao, Councilor of Brgy. Tunasan, Muntinlupa City. Both of them emphasized the importance of senior citizens in the fight against drug abuse and expressed gratitude to the DDB staff for sharing their time and effort in the conduct of the said training seminar.
Ms. Delpha E. Denosta, Project Development Officer III, DDB, briefed the participants on the mechanics and objectives of the said seminar, followed by the leveling of expectations as well as the setting of ground rules to be observed during the entire duration of the said training seminar.
Ms. Ma. Consorcia J. Ruiz, Administrative Officer II, DDB, updated the participants on the extent of the country’s problem on illegal drugs and cited the most common modes of drug trafficking including the use of drug mules or couriers. She also highlighted the different preventive education programs of the Board and the government efforts to eliminate the tremendous drug problem in the country.
The national drug situation in the country was discussed by Atty. Ronnie N. Cudia, Deputy Director for Intelligence and Investigation Service, PDEA while Atty. Cesar G. Posada, Legal Consultant, DDB, explained the Treatment and Rehabilitation Process, the Drug Testing Procedures under RA 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Act of 2002). Atty. Posada gave emphasis on the legal basis for the random drug testing, the duties and responsibilities of the communities and person in authority who can initiate programs on drug abuse prevention and control.
Dr. Susan Gregorio, Medical Consultant, DDB National Trainer on Universal Prevention Curriculum, talked about the Medical Aspects of Drug Abuse. Her discussion focused on the harmful effects of drugs to the body and brain when it is being abused, and the consequences that will affect their family and the community.
In his closing message, PSSupt. Florocito E. Ragudo (Ret.) cited the importance of the said seminar to heighten the awareness and encourage the senior citizens, despite their age, to be sensitive to the problems of the society. “I would like to express my profound thanks and gratitude to the DDB officials and staff in conducting this seminar and for sharing their time and knowledge from which the participants had benefited.” PSSupt. Ragudo said.
