With the aim of equipping the out of school youth with knowledge on substance abuse and prevention, enhance their skills, attitudes and ability to face problems, the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), together with the Local Government of San Antonio, Nueva Ecija, and Ako Ang Saklay Center conducted a Seminar on Drug Abuse Prevention for Out-of-School Youth (OSY).
Some 133 participants joined the said seminar and actively participated in the discussions.
Fr. Arnold Abelardo, Director, “Ako Ang Saklay Center,” welcomed the participants and shared the history of the center and the goals they wanted to achieve.
Local government officials also graced the seminar and gave their messages. In their speech, they pointed out that illegal drugs are considered to be one of the most serious problems in the society today as it destroys the life of the Filipino youth. They keep on reiterating the famous adage of our National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, “The Filipino Youth is the hope of our Nation.”
Ms. Jenhmarie Dawn T. Frias, Administrative Aide IV, DDB, discussed the Government Response to Drug Problem. Her discussion focused on the different programs formulated by the DDB and its partner agencies to address the drug problem.
Atty. Philip Josef Vera Cruz, Chief, Legal Division, DDB, explained the Salient Provisions of RA 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002) as well as the procedures of treatment and rehabilitation program. He further discussed the relevant provisions of the law and gave examples of cases where they can be applied.
On the other hand, the topic about Ill Effects of Dangerous Drugs was taken by Dr. Susan Gregorio, MD, DOH. During her talk, Dr. Gregorio discussed the risks of using illegal drugs and its negative effects on the physical and mental health of the body.
This seminar was conducted at Barangay Luyos, San Antonio, Nueva Ecija, on September 11, 2015.
